Background of the study
WhatsApp group chats in Nigeria serve as vibrant spaces for linguistic creativity where codeswitching is routinely employed to navigate diverse communicative contexts. In these digital conversations, users seamlessly alternate between English, indigenous languages, and pidgin, reflecting Nigeria’s multilingual heritage and the dynamic nature of online interaction (Ibrahim, 2024). This codeswitching is not merely incidental but a strategic practice used to convey nuance, establish social identity, and negotiate interpersonal relationships. The informal, fast-paced environment of WhatsApp fosters an adaptive language use where speakers blend vocabulary, grammar, and idiomatic expressions to suit varying audiences and conversational settings. Cultural references, humor, and emotive markers further enrich these interactions, contributing to an evolving digital discourse that mirrors broader social and linguistic transformations. Such interactions also challenge traditional monolingual norms, prompting researchers to reconsider established models of language contact and bilingual communication. As users participate in group chats, the resultant codeswitching patterns provide insight into identity construction, community belonging, and linguistic innovation in a digital age. This study aims to document these practices comprehensively, examining how codeswitching functions as both a communicative resource and a marker of cultural identity in Nigerian WhatsApp group chats (Okeke, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Despite the prevalence of codeswitching in Nigerian WhatsApp group chats, systematic investigations into its patterns and functions remain scarce. Existing studies have primarily focused on offline contexts or singular language settings, neglecting the nuanced, platform-specific practices that occur online (Chukwu, 2024). This gap limits our understanding of how digital environments shape multilingual communication. The current research intends to address this shortfall by providing a detailed analysis of codeswitching in WhatsApp group chats, exploring its implications for identity construction and communication efficiency, and assessing its role in the evolution of Nigerian digital discourse (Afolabi, 2023).

Research questions
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it illuminates the role of codeswitching in shaping Nigerian digital discourse, offering critical insights into multilingual communication strategies. The findings will inform sociolinguistic theory, digital communication practices, and language education, ultimately enhancing our understanding of how technology fosters linguistic innovation (Ibrahim, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study
This study focuses exclusively on WhatsApp group chats in Nigeria and examines codeswitching practices therein. It is limited to online text-based communication and does not extend to other platforms or offline language use.
